46.1 Synergy - A Software KM

{#sec:kvm-synergy}

Synergy (http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/) is a software KM package which lets you use a single keyboard and mouse for multiple computers each with their own video display. This may be a useful alternative to hardware KVM!

To use synergy, install the package:

wajig install synergy

Next, create a config file /etc/synergy.conf:

section: screens
  computer1:

  computer2:

end

section: links
  computer1:
    right = computer2
  computer2:
    left = computer1
end

section: aliases
  computer1:
    computer1.hostname.com
  computer2:
    computer2.hostname.com
end

Then, start the server on the computer with the keyboard and mouse you want to use:

synergys -f

And lastly, we start the client(s):

synergyc -f --no-camp server-hostname

Move the cursor to the right of computer1 and it should pop up on computer2! The clipboard is even shared across the computers.
