52 Mounting Devices

20210511 Devices including equipment like remote storage, USB thumb drives, and mobile phones, can present themselves as storage devices to our computer. We describe the process of making the device available to our computer as mounting the device—that is, we mount the device onto our computer.

Systems typically used to mount remote storage devices (hard disk drives or solid state drives) include nfs and sshfs.

Most systems will use hotplug and udev with gnome-volume-manager to automatically mount removable devices when they are plugged in.
