26.34 Mailing Lists

20210302 Mailman is a popular open source mailing list manager. After installing mailman run mmsitepass to set the site password. Then visit the mailman administration site, such as http://togaware.com/cgi-bin/mailman/admin/.

A local and simple alternative is to add a list of email addresses to /etc/aliases on your host. Then use rdist to distribute the aliases file to the local machines. This simple setup may well suffice for a small local network.

Mailman Change List Name

20210302 Once created it is difficult and messy to change the name of the mailing list. Instead, simply create a new mailing list and transfer the subscribed addresses and configuration settings over. Once it is working simply remove the old mailing list.

Note that archives generally can not be moved from the old mailing list to the new one.

If you really must, the Mailman FAQ provides the instructions. There are something like 50 or more steps! If you have not started using the list and so there is no archive, simply start with a new one.
