60.12 Dynamic Host Name Mapping

A number of providers supply free Dynamic DNS services whereby a home user connecting through an ISP with dynamic IP addresses (the IP address changes on each new connection) can associate a host name with the IP address. This is like controlling a moving target, and works very well.

You can find your current IP address with:

  lynx -dump http://checkip.dyndns.org \
  | sed -n '/Current/s/.*: \([0-9]*\.[0-9]*\.[0-9]*\.[0-9]*\)/\1/p'

or with

  wget http://www.whatismyip.org/ -qO - | html2text
